September has been a busy month at Davila! With the start of school, fall sports, and the introduction of the new PBIS system!
Scholars and teachers have had a great start to the 2018-2019 new school year! Lady Texan Volleyball is in full swing as well as Texan Football! Make sure to check the schedules, get to a game and cheer on our Texan Scholars!
In Texan Success, the scholars have been exploring this month’s Essential 8 characteristic: Kindness! To promote our Texan Pride and emphasize Kindness, our PBIS system has been key. At its core, PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) seeks to change the tone of conversation when it comes to student behavior -- we are no longer focusing on changing inappropriate behavior after an event has taken place. Instead, we are proactively teaching correct behaviors through specific instruction and first-hand modeling. Now, students have an example to look to instead of just a list of rules which they aren’t to break. When inappropriate behavior happens (as it will), teachers and staff also can use this resource to teach an appropriate replacement behavior. This is important because it is not enough to say “don’t do *this*” because a new behavior could be just as disruptive as the last; instead, PBIS teaches students what to do *instead* of what they were doing and not just that they aren’t supposed to do what it was that got them into a mess. Finally, since we are working proactively and we are teaching acceptable replacement behaviors, we are bringing about more positive conversations about behavior than we ever have before. This is excellent because a positive conversation about behavior will almost always be more enjoyable and engaging than a negative referral.
A special thanks to Mr. Lander, Mrs. Oatman and our PBIS team for introducing and implementing the program to our Texan Community!
